Why Faith?

HealingPeople sometimes accuse me of teaching too much on faith. To my way of thinking that's like the football player complaining because the football coach keeps making them lift weights, or the basketball player complaining because the basketball coach keeps making them run, or the karateca complaining because the sensei keeps making them do the same kata over and over and over again. Faith is the muscle of Christianity. Without faith Christianity becomes weak, powerless, and unable to do anything. Sound familiar? We're so used to Christianity being weak, powerless and disabled that we think it's normal.

King Kenny

KennyCongratulations to Kenny Taylor pictured above who was elected Homecoming King on Saturday. Since Jeremiah is in the Band I get to announce the Bands pregame and halftime shows. Friday was Homecoming so the scripts were quite a bit longer for both. During the pregame I had to announce the candidates for Homecoming King. Each candidate is apparently asked to submit a little write up about himself, his interests, his future plans etc. Here's what Kenny's said:

Doctors Go On Strike, Deaths Plummet

DoctorOkay, I confess, I'm one of those guys who doesn't have a great deal of confidence in medical doctors. I think it's partly as a result of working as a lawyer. During the 8 or 9 years I worked full time as a lawyer I never worked in the area of medical malpractice, yet in spite of this I ran into several medical malpractice cases. To a certain extent, I would have been, kind of, the last resort for someone with a medical malpractice case. The last resort because they had already been advised by the lawyers who specialized in medical malpractice that they didn't have a case. Didn't have a case not because they weren't negligently injured by a doctor but because a California Law, MICRA,(Medical Insurance Crisis Reduction Act, I believe, emphasis on Insurance. Like my mom likes to say insurance companies didn't build those big buildings by paying off claims.) effectively protects doctors from any but the most costly malpractice claims. So in the course of my legal beagle practice, I came across, (I guess I should say they came

Remembering Uncle Steve 1944-2005

Marlenasteve

Just wanted to post a little remembrance of my Uncle Steve. (Here's a photo with his daughter, Marlena, at her wedding.) His name was really Marvin Stephen Lorensen but since there was already a Marvin in the family, my grandmother's brother Marvin, Marvin Stephen became just plain Steve. My mom was the oldest of 7 children, Paula, Steve, Spike, Kathy, Juanito, Dana and Ronnie. I think she always thought of Steve as her little brother, which I guess he was. We, my mom's kids, were pretty close in age to her younger brothers and sisters., (Ronnie is only a year older than me and he's a year younger than my brother Eddie.) as a result we were closer

No Prayer is Too Small For God

ParkingmeterLots of people have the idea that it's somehow offensive to pray to God for little things like parking spaces. The unspoken assumption behind those sentiments is that there is only a limited amount of God's power to go around so we'd better save it for important things. The Bible on the other hand teaches than we shouldn't be anxious about anything but that in every situation we should make our requests known to God. When we do so, the Bible says, the peace of God, which passes understanding will guard our hearts and minds.
This peace that doesn't make sense, however is only ours when

The Bible Turns Out To Be True Dept.

ArchaeologistChristianity Today's online presence had an interesting blurb today about a couple of archaeological finds in Jerusalem which support the accuracy of the Bible. One from the New Testament and one from the Old.

First, archaeologists digging in Jerusalem believe they've found the pool of Siloam mentioned in the Gospel of John, in the story about the blind man whom Jesus daubs with mud and the tells to go wash in the pool of Siloam. According to CT some experts on the Gospel of John had considered the story to be "a metaphor."

Second, at another dig in Jerusalem an archaeologist believes she's found the the ruins of King David's palace.

Interesting article, read it here.

Why Did Jesus Have To Come?

Englishtvicon_8Why did Jesus have to come to the earth? Why was he born of a virgin, why did he go around healing, doing miracles and gathering disciples? Why did he die on the cross? Why did he rise from the dead? Why did he ascend to the right hand of the father? The Bible teaches that before Jesus came Satan was the King of this world he was the tyrant or dictator over mankind. In order to understand why Jesus came we must first off understand this fact.

Is God The Terminator?

(This post is a rerun, but I got to reading it and enjoyed it so much I thought I'd post it again.)

There's an interesting discussion occurring on World Magazine's Blog and across the Internet, about Theodicy. That's the theological term used for questions about God's goodness in the face of pervasive evil. The discussion was, of course, started by the recent Tsunami in Southeast Asia. If God is good how could he cause or allow such a horrible thing to happen? How could a loving God allow so many men, women, children and even infants to die?
